TBT: Muddy Water Demands “Champagne & Reefer”

muddy16Before there was Snoop Dog, there was Muddy Waters. Mississippi born McKinley Morganfield, aka Muddy Waters, is famous for bridging the gap between the Delta blues and modern day rock n’ roll. He was the master of the Chicago blues scene during the 1950s and took England by storm in the 1960s, shocking crowds with his unique electric blues sound.

And he loved the weed.

“Well you know there should be no law

On people that want to smoke a little dope.

Well you know it’s good for your head

And it relax your body don’t you know.”

Muddy was smoking doobies while Snoop-a-loop was still in his little doggie diapers. Muddy Waters was inspiring the Rolling Stones to name their band after his hit song while Snoop was still slurpin’ sizzurp from a bottle. Muddy Waters was helping Chuck Berry get his first record contract before Snoop “smoked weed everyday.”

“I’m gonna get high

Gonna get high just as sure as you know my name.

Y’know I’m gonna get so high this morning

It’s going to be a cryin’ shame.”

So this Throwback Thursday, let’s celebrate the legend Muddy Waters (… fine, and we’ll continue to relish in the 420 aftermath) with his song “Champagne & Reefer.”
