Downtown Lowdown: Roll Play

Downtown Employee Appreciation Week is here, and The Denver Pavilions wants worker bees to have a ball this Thursday at lunchtime. Two of them, actually. Flaming Lips fans will recognize the eight-foot translucent spheres as frontman Wayne Coyne's crowd-surfing transportation of choice. Beta Entertainment Director Ms. Easy's got one too (she uses it at raves like Skylab). In this case, contestants will manipulate the aforementioned human hamster balls down Glenarm in hot pursuit of bragging rights, YouTube glory and even prizes. Downtown trivia will determine which "baller" gets the advantage. Tyler Perry's Shed G is set to emcee. We're not sure whose harebrained idea this was, but we like it. How does it show people who work downtown they're loved? Maybe participating in a simulated rodent race is more fun than merely being part of the proverbial one.

Shutterbuggin’: Beta’s fairytale campaign

Tired of being invited to nightclubs by stock photography models who'll never step foot inside? Beta, arguably the number one club in the country, offered a remedy in March when it kicked off a fairytale-inspired promotional campaign featuring actual club employees. Novel idea, right? Lauren, one of Beta's VIP hostesses, played Dorothy for the introductory Wizard of Oz images. I weaseled my way into the part of Scarecrow. And Toto was masterfully channeled by an ankle-biter belonging to photographer Jonathan Shoup's girlfriend.

Road Trippin’: Electric Daisy Carnival

Rolling Stone is a rock among print publications. It's also one of the few that I actually subscribe to. Comprehensive music industry coverage and no-holds-barred political reporting is a recipe that regularly sates my IQ appetite. Imagine my surprise when the newest issue arrived--and I found myself inside it.

Festival Window: Winter Music Conference

Winter Music Conference may seem like a misnomer to many, due to its Sunshine State stomping grounds, but Colorado Conference goers were nearly cock blocked by Old Man Winter for the second year in a row. Denver was blanketed in a solid foot of snow when I left; Miami's umpteenth annual mixologist mixer was on fire when I arrived. Beat dieters from around the world rendezvoused en masse for seven days in heaven. Superstar DJs were in abundant supply. Supermodels came out of the woodwork. And dancefloors were demolished left and right.

Aural Pleasure: MGMT’s Grammy Nods

Alex Khadiwala deserves credit for first turning me on to MGMT. These days, Khadiwala is one of Beta's Noise Friday resident DJs. At the time, though, he played “Poptronica” on Beta's patio for the Beatport “Pool Parties”. One of his very first Poptronica mix CDs featured the MGMT track “Electric Feel”. I won't pretend that I was immediately blown away, but the tune definitely grew on me over time. Apparently, I wasn't alone.

Aural Pleasure: Sydney Blu

Blu has come a long way in her day, gradually surpassing many of her female peers in both the production and performance departments. Inking a deal with Deadmau5 vanity imprint Mau5trap certainly didn't hurt, but Sydney has since launched her own label--Blu Music--and continued to perform well on Beatport.com's virtual stage sans Deadmau5 hand-holding in the studio.
