Downward Dog Style: Going Kino, YRP edition

Last Sunday amidst many beautiful yogis, I took part for the first time in YRP, and wondered how come I hadn’t gone every weekend before. Tents with beautiful clothes, mala beads, up-and-coming companies (like YogaDates), free Garbanzo’s Mediterranean food, Jamba Juice–of course, you do have to buy a ticket to get in–but hey, at $10/Sunday that’s beyond a steal. Led by Tina Porter and Kirk Lautensleger with beats by DJ Tres, we had a serene sunny morning practice that I’m fairly certain put a little fairy dust in everyone’s bonnet for the rest of the day, and right before I hopped on my bike, I heard that this Sunday’s YRP would be extra special because of someone named Kino.

In the circles of seduction, “going kino” means engaging in physical contact. At this point in “the game” words have become superfluous, touch becomes the next frontier, and that as-yet-undiscovered country holds the promise of further adventure or getting shut down. In the circles of yoga, going Kino doesn’t quite mean the same thing, or maybe it does, let’s start a trend. Yoga is certainly physical, and YogaDates has a tent at Yoga Rocks the Park. But that could be any sunday at YRP. This coming Sunday, August 5th, 2012, there will be a whole different form of Kino, as in first name Kino, last name Macgregor.

Kino Macgregor–Jedi Yogi

Kino Macgregor has the distinction of learning directly from Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore India, which by itself would be spectacular, but she’s actually been certified to teach Ashtanga Yoga by Jois, and has mastered the 3rd series (the youngest woman to do so)–there are six total series in Ashtanga, each successively harder–so it seems the force is quite strong with young Macgregor.

Accompanying Macgregor at Alamo Placita park will be DJ Dragonfly, one of the most sought after yoga DJ’s around–he’s a Wanderlust fave–and is coming all the way to the Mile High from California, and considering Kino is coming from Florida, the triangulation must have some meaning. It is 2012 after all.

Join Kino and DJ Dragonfly this Sunday at YRP at Alamo Placita Park…music starts at 9:30a. Yoga starts at 10 and goes till 11:15.

Special thanks to Carl Kerridge, who bravely rides the wave of yogic energy at YRP with only a lens to protect him.
