Wonderbound, formerly known as Ballet Nouveau Colorado, will wrap up their season with yet another Industrial Project, this time in their new space in Five Points. With performances Saturday, May 4 at 7:30 pm, and Sunday, May 5 at 2:00 pm, the piece will feature choreography by the dancers themselves in addition to and Co-Artistic Director Dawn Fay’s works.

Dancer’s rehearse Sarah Tallman’s piece for 2013 Industrial Project

I asked dancer Damien Patterson a few questions about Industrial Project, the space, and his approach to dance. I’ve always found Patterson to be one of the most enjoyable dancers in the company to watch, and was eager to keep true to my word with regard to focusing on male dancers for the remainder of the 2012-2013 season in Denver.

Anything special about this year’s Industrial Project you’d like to share?

Industrial Project  is going to be extra special this year because of the move from Broomfield to Five Points, into a building  that screams Industrial! So something new is bound to happen. I can’t wait to see what we all come up with. There always a thread that connects us no matter how different we are.

Something about Wonderbound’s new space that speaks to you.

What I love about Wonderbound’s new space is that there is space. There are no mirrors and I feel free to move  and learn without the crutch of the image of myself in front of me. I don’t like to watch myself on video at all and the new space is not typical for a dance company in America, but it is right up my alley to feel my way through things and not worry about how pretty things are, but how wonderful dance feels.

You’re such an enjoyable dancer to watch. What is it that moves you?

What moves me?  I have to say that my spirit moves me and my flesh is just along for the ride. There is no particular style that is my favorite, because as a dancer I  enjoy my own instincts, which is encouraged here with Wonderbound . When I am home in Baltimore I do dance ministry which helps me keep my spirit visible in my dancing . I feel that the spirit is  a powerful tool for a performer, followed by technique and hard work.
