Colorado Had Several James Beard Finalists — Only One Took Home the Award

Colorado’s culinary scene has another reason to celebrate.

The 2026 James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards were announced Monday night in Chicago, recognizing some of the nation’s most talented chefs, restaurateurs, and hospitality leaders. While several Colorado finalists earned nominations this year, only one brought home a coveted James Beard Award.

Penelope Wong, chef and owner of Denver’s beloved Yuan Wonton, was named Best Chef: Mountain Region, a category that includes Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming.

Often referred to as the “Oscars of the food world,” the James Beard Awards recognize culinary professionals who demonstrate exceptional talent, leadership and innovation while helping create a more sustainable and positive restaurant culture.

For Wong, the honor marks a major milestone not only for her restaurant but also for Denver’s growing reputation as one of the country’s most exciting food destinations.

From Food Truck Favorite to James Beard Winner

What started as a passionate culinary project has evolved into one of Denver’s most celebrated dining experiences. Yuan Wonton has earned a devoted following for its creative interpretation of Asian cuisine, blending traditional Chinese dumplings, Taiwanese comfort food and flavors inspired by cultures across Asia.

Wong’s menu showcases both technical precision and playful creativity, turning familiar comfort dishes into unforgettable dining experiences.

Among the restaurant’s standout offerings are the YW OG Chili Oil Wontons, Hong Kong-style pork and shrimp wontons swimming in a custom Szechuan chili oil sauce, and the fan-favorite Shelby J (Sheng Jian Bao), scratch-made pork and chive buns pan-fried until they develop a crispy sesame crust.

Other crowd favorites include Pad Krapao Potstickers, inspired by Thailand’s iconic basil dish, and Szechuan Eggplant Dumplings, a popular vegetarian option packed with Chinese eggplant, bok choy and pickled chilies.

A Menu That Travels Across Asia

Beyond dumplings, Yuan Wonton offers a menu filled with bold flavors and inventive dishes.

The restaurant’s Dan Dan Noodles feature fresh chewy noodles topped with spicy doubanjiang pork, Szechuan peppercorns and fermented mustard greens, while the Crying Tiger Steak delivers a perfectly crisp reverse-seared ribeye paired with a fiery Thai nam jim jaew sauce and jasmine rice.

One of the restaurant’s most talked-about dishes is the Taiwanese Fried Chicken Gua Bao, where crispy five-spice fried chicken is tucked inside a fluffy steamed bun and finished with chive aioli.

Guests can finish their meal with the signature Ube Crème Brûlée, a vibrant purple yam custard topped with a crackling caramelized sugar crust, chantilly cream and boba pearls.

The beverage program is equally thoughtful, featuring curated craft sakes, Asian-inspired cocktails and local favorites, including Bierstadt Lagerhaus’ Slow Pour Pilsner.

A Big Win for Denver Dining

Wong’s James Beard victory is more than a personal achievement. It shines a national spotlight on Denver’s evolving culinary landscape and reinforces the city’s growing influence in the restaurant world.

As diners increasingly look beyond traditional food capitals, restaurants like Yuan Wonton are proving that some of the country’s most innovative and exciting meals can be found right here in Colorado.
