Colorado has, in recent years, become a destination for beauty seekers from across the nation and globe. And travel experts from award-winning sites like Trip Advisor, Lonely Planet and Budget Travel have begun to take notice. This morning, Budget Travel named Durango one of America’s Coolest Small Towns — and if you haven’t had a chance to escape to this humble mountain getaway, now, when the weather is warm, is the time to do it.

“Durango is known not only for its old West heritage and abundant outdoor activities, but also as a charming, yet cutting-edge place to visit,” explained Frank Lockwood, Executive Director with DATO. “There has never been a better time to explore all that Durango has to offer, from Mesa Verde National Park and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, to the newly opened Lake Nighthorse recreation area to art galleries, shops, restaurants, and award-micro breweries.”

It’s located in Southwestern Colorado, near the New Mexcian Boarder and about 6 hours from Denver. Regardless of its small-town vibe, this quaint getaway sees more than 600,000 visitors annually, and while places like Boulder, Aspen and Breckenridge may make it to the public eye more frequently — Durango has the natural beauty and local entertainment to match any famous Colorado mountain town. Budget Travel noted Durango as a small town destination for its natural beauty, mouth-watering food scene, nightlife and seasonal appeal — it also attracts those who want top dollar views at approachable prices. Whether you’re looking for a swanky getaway in a high-end hotel or a laid-back escape in a cozy cabin, Durango has something for all preferences and seasons. And apart from cool places to lodge, its hosted some awesome events. From the Music in the Mountains Classical Music Festival to unique distillery and brewery events and magical hikes in the surrounding terrain, this small town has certainly earned its spot on Budget Travel’s list.

  1. I heard of this town several times but I have never had chance to visit. What a pretty town! Thank you for sharing! Gotta plan a trip to Durango this fall.

  2. As a Minneapolis Minnesota native we were brought to Durango for our young adult to attend school there. We never expected to fall so in love with the area. The Proximity is incredible for different adventures. You are within 2.5 hours of of Mesa Varda, Silverton/Ouray/Telluride, Pagosa Springs, Wolf Creek, The Four corners, Middle Mountain and many great ski resorts, hiking, kayaking and adventure. But Durango itself holds such a fun little life. It’s beautiful, entertaining and lots of interesting things to do. The nightlife is fun, great food and restaurants and very friendly people. The prices are also good for food and lodging. I don’t like to spread the word about Durango to often because after retirement this is where we are heading, I don’t think I can do -10 to -35 winters and average snowfall of 50 with snow that hits the ground in Nov and stays in the ground until Mar.
See you in about 8 yrs Durango!!!!
