CandiDates: U Up 4 a Flck 2nite?

While I know it’s the digitized age and I am all for Shazam, Fruit Ninja and Facebook check-ins, when it comes to dating, I am an old-fashionista at heart. Don’t get me wrong, the instances of preferred texting far outweigh the desire for phone chats. For instance, if you’re calling to ask me to work your shift, please text, so I have time to come up with a phenomenal excuse; if you need to come by unannounced to borrow something, type up the request to give me time to “not be home”. But, if you want to take me on a date, and I have been glued to my phone, certain it will ring the moment I step foot into the bathroom (oh, who am I kidding, it goes to the bathroom with me—though how I would explain the echo or the sound of running water to that long-awaited voice on the other line is enough of a topic for another blog), do me the honor and, instead of typing, dial my number. One, texts can be easily misinterpreted, just look at the title of this piece. Plus, the grammatical errors won’t score you any points, and we do notice them. Two, I am concerned for your safety—don’t text and drive unless you know how to text and how to drive (and almost no one has both of those skill-sets, don’t kid yourself). Oh, you say texting can now be voice-activated? Let’s see, so you have to speak into your phone, to no one in particular, in order to send me a message? I mustn’t go on.

Being asked out via a device may save face if you’re expecting rejection, but why expect a “no” if you already have the digits? Or, maybe you use this tactic for mass texts so that your odds of ending up alone on date night slim down? In either case, try the tried-and-true dial for a personal touch; I promise plenty of us, old-school females, still exist. If you’re not the chatter type, just get straight to the point. Once the date is accepted, we will be too eager to get off the phone and start raiding our closet for proper date attire, anyway.

Then again, my last digital date request ended with a ring on my finger, so maybe I should get onboard and welcome the 21st Century e-vites.
