This weekend in Denver, we celebrate autumn with a few unique things to do. As the first week of November comes to a close, colder weather and holiday season is approaching, though the warm weather in the 303 may say otherwise. Whether it is getting an early taste start on Holiday meals, getting pumped up for the ski & snowboard season, or celebrating the “Dark Goddess,” there is something for everyone going on this weekend in Denver.

The Lowdown: Denver’s Film Festival returns again this year, with a ton of films from international, national and local filmmakers. The event runs for almost two weeks, offering multiple showings a day. Check out here for a full schedule of the event here and make sure to read our guide here. This is definitely an opportunity for film-lovers to get a chance to check out some projects that have had a lot of time put into production. Some films will bring in stars like Emma Stone for her film La La Land, while others will showcase the unique documentary scene home to the 303.

2nd Annual Holiday Tasting Meal

The Lowdown: As the colder months approach, comfort food will become more of a staple for Holiday dinner meals. Get a taste of the Holidays a few weeks early at the 2nd Annual Holiday Meal Tasting at the Kitchen Table: BBQ & Comfort Food. You will be able to get complimentary samples all of the special holiday items, with a chance to get 10 percent your order of holiday meals/pies. The event also includes free beer & wine for those 21+.

The Low Down: Celebrate the one-year birthday of the Funnyside Session, a monthly comedy and video show that showcases the comedy scene home to the 303. There will be a ton of laughs and surprises,with new sketchs, music, videos and stand-up performances. The event is sponsored by Image Brew and Ratio Beerworks, with donation beer provided by Ratio Beerworks. Come drink, laugh and celebrate a one-year party for a great resource for our Denver comedy scene.

Sips of Fire – Ladies Night

When: Grizzly Rose – 5450 North Valley Highway, Denver

Cost: $5 cover for ladies, $10 ladies ages 18 – 20

The Low Down: Firefighters, puppies and drink specials? Ladies, that is the recipe for a hot night this Thursday at the Grizzly Rose. Come celebrate and support our local Firefighters and Fire Rescue dogs, with Emily McKenzie from Mix 100 introducing the firefighters. You’ll even a chance to cuddle with the puppies of Lifeline Puppy Rescue.

The Low Down: If the week was a bit too stressful, head on over to the Denver Zoo this Friday for a free day of animal and family fun. The Denver Zoo will be hosting one of its free zoo days this first Friday of November. You’ll have the chance to explore exhibits that showcase the wide diversity of animals home to the Denver Zoo. This Free day will be sponsored by Colorado Springs House Hunters.

The Low Down: Winter is coming. Get ready for the ski & snowboard season this weekend at the Colorado Ski & Snowboard Expo. This is the events 25th anniversary, and will feature giveaways, live acts and interactive exhibits to get you pumped up for the ski & snowboard season.The event is held all weekend, so if you can’t make it Friday, there’s still Saturday and Sunday.

The Low Down: What better way to end the week than a dance party to shamelessly groove to your guilty pleasure songs. Pump up the Jam with Guilty Pleasures, who will be hosting a dance Party at the Hi-Dive Friday that will feature all of your favorite guilty pleasures and ’90s dance hits. Join others who love the same guilty pleasures as you, and dance your way into the weekend. The event is 21+, with a $5 cover charge.

The Lowdown: Have a flashback Friday and hop back into the awkward angst-filled adolescent years this Friday at the Oriental Theater. Mortified Live celebrates the terrible, strange, and yet nostalgically incredible things created in your teen years. There will be an ’80/’90s cover band, a crimped hair contest and a reading from six lucky individuals sharing the poetry written from adolescence.  Don’t be reluctant to break out the old wardrobe and dress like it’s the late ’80s or ’90s again.

The Lowdown: With this being the First Friday of the month, a celebration of local arts is in order. There will be live music, food and hands-on art as well.

The Lowdown: Get your mermaid on and celebrate with other mermaids at  Under the Sea Mystic Mermaid Breakfast this Saturday morning at the Denver Aquarium. With the purchase of ticket, you get to have a breakfast with other fellow mermaids, with the chance for pictures and autographs. There are two breakfast times available at either 8:30 a.m. or 9:45 a.m.

The Lowdown: What goes together better than bacon and beer? Nothing. Enjoy the beauty of both bacon and beer at the five year anniversary of this event this Saturday. There will be tons of beer from over 24 breweries, bacon-inspired dishes to match the beers from more than 15 participating restaurants. The purchase of a ticket gives you unlimited tastings from the breweries and restaurants, with proceeds benefiting Metro Care and Project Angel Heart.

The Lowdown: If you’ve missed a Dia de Los Muertos party this past week, celebrate a belated Day of the Dead at the Denver Botanic Gardens. Dia de Lost Muertos is a two-day celebration of those who’ve crossed over to the other side with lots of color and decoration. Don’t be afraid to dress in holiday costumes, as this event encourages it. There will be arts, crafts and entertainment at the event, with of course the added compliment of being at the beautiful Denver Botanic Gardens.

The Lowdown: Celebrate Learn to Homebrew Day’s 18th anniversary this year at the Station 26 Brewing Co. OG Homebrewers will be providing an informative session on teaching potential home brewers the ins and outs of creating your own brew, and encourages homebrewers from all levels of expertise to share in this learning experience. This is an engaging experience that helps introduce individuals to the science and art of creating their own beer.

Music Video Premiere #StopDrinkingProject

The Lowdown:  The #StopDrinkingProject is a music video and social project by musician Buddhakai. The music video discusses a story of alcoholism and hopes to raise awareness about this disease. From 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. there will be a gourmet mashed potato bar and cocktail hour, with the premier of the video starting at 8:15 p.m. Following the premier, there will be a Q & A. This event will take place in the RiNo district at the “A Touch of Bliss” event center.

BYOB Warehouse Party

The Lowdown: The Denver Innocence Project will be hosting a BYOB party this Friday at The Bakery. The Innocence Project is a nonprofit organization who provides legal services to help free people wrongfully accused of a crime and exonerate those who are convicted for a crime they didn’t do. There will be music by Jobless, DJ Brick Lee of Treehouse Collective, Sho-Thyme and Dutch Angels. The event is BYOB, but it is asked that guests do not bring any glass bottles.

Dark Goddess Festival 2016

The Lowdown: Summoning all goddesses, this Sunday the Mercury Cafe will be hosting the 2016 Dark Goddess Festival. This is a celebration of  darkness, inner mysteries, shadows and the Dark Goddess. There will be healers, readers, a live DJ and door prizes. There will also be a ritual to the Dark Goddess, the goddess of our deepest desires and hidden knowledge, to conclude the festival.

FreakEasy : Stranger than Fiction

The Lowdown:  The Circus Emporium FreakEasy will be hosting the Stranger than Fiction event this Sunday evening at 3 Kings Tavern. The event is set to blow guests minds, with many talented acts. There will be juggling, magic, hooping, dancing, live comedy music by Jimmy Curtis and music by DJ Zombie. The event is filled  with strange and entertaining game shows for audience volunteers, so you could be going home with a prize. Be prepared to celebrate the weird and get freaky at this fun Sunday night event.
