Traveling over the holidays can be stressful and packing can be just as challenging. Drinks with old friends, to nights in with the family cater to a wide variety of pieces that normally result in an overpacked suitcase. The addition of gifts can make even the most well-traveled a Scrooge.

When you are beginning to plan your outfits for the journey, simplicity is key. Staple pieces can work for every occasion with the right layer and balance. Here are a few ideas to help keep your carry-on light but still jammed packed with fashionable pieces this holiday season.

The versatility of a good dress goes a long way. You can wear it as both a dress and mixed with your favorite tops as a skirt. A full option works best for most shapes and still looks put together under a simple sweater or cropped t-shirt. A basic color is the easiest to mix and match but make sure to include a pair of tights for the colder days.

A collared shirt is the perfect piece for a variety of outfits and activities. It can be worn under a jumper, layered with a sweater or tucked into a favorite skirt. It also doesn’t take up much space in your carry-on and works as a great staple in any wardrobe. White is an easy choice but a hint of color mixes well with everything this time of year.

Tank Top

As one of the easiest tops to wear year-round, the tank top can be seen in outfits of all shapes and styles. A fancier fabric looks great with a cardigan but can be used as a base layer under a shear top as well. Try experimenting with a few different styles but try to select the one that accentuates the right areas and makes you feel great all day.

Blanket Scarf

You don’t have to be traveling into cold weather to rock a large scarf. They are the perfect decoration to any outfit and can be worn with almost everything. Pick a favorite pattern and wear it on the plane as is, in place of a blanket for a little warmth and as a shawl in the evening. The scarf is an escape from the standard cardigan but can still be worn around with ease.

Accessories

The finishing touch to any outfit is in the little details. Adding a belt, working a hat or accessorizing with your favorite jewelry can make any wardrobe stand out. If you’re not really into color, find a fun necklace or patterned belt. You can still keep the relaxed look during the day and spice it up for a night out.

Less can be more with the right pieces for every holiday or event. Once you’re able to narrow down the most important pieces, packing will become a breeze. The holidays should be about celebration and what better way is there to celebrate than in your favorite dress you feel great in every day?
