Gluten-Free Foodie: Basil Doc’s Pizza

Basil Doc's pie

Nestled in a few lucky neighborhoods throughout the Denver area lies Basil Doc’s Pizzeria. A creative pizza joint combining healthy and flavorful ingredients this pizza parlor is a wonderful place for people looking to grab a quick great tasting gluten free pizza.

Unlike many other pizza restaurants, Basil Doc’s handcrafts their own gluten free crust. The gluten free pizza crust is made from polenta. Polenta is basically boiled cornmeal. Unfortunately the crust tends to fall apart because polenta lacks the tactile strength one might find in other pizza crusts combining multiple gluten free flours. However, this doesn’t impact the flavor of the crust. While very thin, the polenta crust has a mild flavor with an excellent texture that doesn’t detract from the ingredients decorating the pizza.

Personally Mexican food is always at the top of the list when it comes to favorite cuisines. Therefore, the pizza chosen to review was the “El Paso.” It is a white pizza topped with mozzarella, ground beef, jalapenos, green chili, red onions, roma tomatoes, chili powder and olive oil. It packs quite a punch. The ingredients complement each other quite nicely while providing ample heat for the palette.

Any of the pizzas Basil Doc’s offers can be baked using the gluten free crust-simply ask for it when ordering. The base price for the cheese pizza is $10 while a specialty starts at $13. Basil Doc’s also offers a variety of salads as well if pizza doesn’t strike the mood. Offering take out, delivery and online ordering, be sure to check out their website at basildocspizzeria.com.
