Downward Dog Style: Yoga Rocks the Park

It’s probably the most fun I’ve ever had at a yoga class.

Definitely the first time my yoga instructor has ever asked me to shake my booty.

And while, for some, music and jokes and booty-shaking may be a bit too distracting for a centered practice, it didn’t stop hundreds from turning out to the first Yoga Rocks the Park of the season at City Park this Sunday. Spread out on the lawn in front of the bandstand, yogis of all levels loosened up, honored their fathers, and even held each others’ feet under the expert but fun-packed instruction of Desi and Micah Springer and set to the music of Koffi Toudji.

Slowly working my way back into the yoga circuit, I’ll admit, it was a workout; but I wouldn’t have been intimidated had it been my first yoga experience either.

This year, Yoga Rocks the Park has a line-up of music and yoga instruction on Sundays from 10 a.m. to noon through September 25. Half the classes will be held in City Park and the other half at Alamo Placita. And for the practicing mommies and daddies, there is an interactive kids camp designed for children five to ten-years-old too.

Most importantly, the entire program has been created to benefit Yoga World Reach, a Colorado-based non-profit that offers yoga and alternative therapy programs to those in need both locally and around the globe
. So not only do you walk away feeling good about your body, you can feel good about giving back as well. It epitomizes yoga practice, perhaps: Feel good holistically.
