One of the standout touring acts at this year’s UMS is New Constellations, a Portland based indie-synth pop-duo taking the Get Loud Stage on Friday, at 6:40 PM. Their hit “Hot Blooded” channels the gritty drama of a 1980s thriller. The song feels like it would be perfectly placed in the movie soundtrack of Drive starring Ryan Gosling. Picture sipping a Colorado craft beer, swaying to this tune’s rhythms on the dance floor. The song’s repeating line, “Just a little bit more,” captures the crowd’s bittersweet connection to UMS, especially as the festival marks its final year, making it a fitting anthem for attendees cherishing every moment. Another track, “Think It Over,” hits with a funky disco vibe while staying true to the duo’s signature 80s stylistic sound. Meanwhile, “Does It Feel Like This” slows things down a notch, delivering a more minimalist edge. It’s definitely a track that pushes boundaries of intimate emotions and curiosity through its lyrics. Jesus Christ Taxi Driver @ Banded Oak, 7:00-7:40

Jesus Christ Taxi Driver are rather hard to pin down and that’s what makes them feel so damn exciting. Steeped in glorious sacrilege, their sound is something akin to a punk rock sermon, replete with huge choruses, rollicking guitar riffs and a rhythm section that hits you like the holy ghost. Their lyrics overflow with a sarcastic mischievousness that belies real rumination on the nature of religion and what makes a person worthy of love, holy or otherwise. In the years following their 2023 debut album Lick My Soul, the band has largely graduated from the Denver music scene, touring the country and making it back every so often for shows at Cervantes’ and its ilk, such as the one coming up on July 30th. This UMS will be something of a homecoming for the genre-defying band and it’ll good to have ’em back.

Rootbeer Richie and the Reveille @ Backyard Stage, 9:00-9:45

By Thomas Rutherford

Oh boy, oh boy, any chance to see Rootbeer Richie and the Reveille is a treat. The best way to describe them might be “punk rock Mardi Gras” music in that they have a distinctly New Orleans sound and aren’t afraid to get heavy when the mood strikes. His songs at times are those of heartbreaks, lamentations to loves lost along the way. At other times, he makes odes to debauchery, soundtracks to drunken nights that don’t end until they give way to morning. This is sure to be one of the biggest parties during all of UMS so don’t miss it. Also, be sure to keep your wits about you as people are known to throw Mardi Gras beads during his sets, creating this beautifully chaotic vibe that hints just enough at danger.

Boot Gun @ Skylark, 12am-12:40am

They’re such a perfect Saturday night band, one that encourages the party to keep rolling long past the end of the set and are sure to have the Skylark absolutely bumping.

Serving up a fierce blend of feminist punk rock with an edge, this Colorado-based duo has been shaking up the scene since 2015. Composed of musicians Jane No and Stephanie Byrne, Cheap Perfume fuses fast-paced riffs with bold, confrontational lyricism that takes aim at misogyny, inequality, and the current political climate. Their anthems — like the fan-favorite “Down to Riot” and “It’s Okay to Punch Nazis”— are rallying cries for justice and inclusivity, wrapped in thrashing guitars and fearless hooks. Don’t miss the chance to experience their unforgettable performance at this iconic festival for the last time!

El Ten Eleven @ Showcase Stage, 5:00-5:45

By Thomas Rutherford

Although they technically hail from LA, El Ten Eleven’s music feels like transmissions from some other, more benevolent universe, somewhere beyond the realm of human understanding where there exists only love and community. Almost totally instrumental, it washes through those who experience it, taking with it pain and hate and anger, leaving only elation and a feeling of soaring through space and time. It’s music that inflates the soul, that causes stars to rain down to earth to remind us where we all came from. If there’s a set that will make tears cascade down over beaming faces this weekend, this is it. Do not miss your chance to soar.

Having played Skylark before, the duo is likely to feel right at home, ready to unleash a set that’ll jive well with the crowd. Keep on the radar for “Bot Pop” a feel good song that has male and female vocals merging together that makes it an irresistible groove. Although, their single “Dynasty Rich”, might just steal the show. It carries a mystical aura, summoning a crystal ball and tarot card reading energy of some type of transcendental event, that will be both memorable and thrillingly surreal. Pleasure Prince is set to enchant Skylark with their cinematic synth pop sorcery.

Her vocals have a gripping narrative that hooks listeners from the first note. Then there’s “Issues,” which takes a darker turn, opening with “I can’t cope with people dying, but I’m not afraid of death.” Its raw, Kendrick Lamar-esque edge, with YaSi laying bare her struggles in the line “I got a lot of issues,” delivers a bold line. YaSi’s set at Hi-Dive promises to showcase why she’s a pop force killing it in the Denver’s scene.

By Thomas Rutherford

SPELLS rules. Let’s just get that point out of the way. They rule so fuckin’ hard. Reminiscent of early Against Me! or bands like The Bouncing Souls, theirs is a kind of life-affirming punk that also makes one realize just how fucked the world is in the way the best punk bands do. This makes them perfectly suited to close out the Hi Dive on the last night of the last UMS, making them the last band many people ever see at the Underground Music Showcase. Their high, infectious energy is sure to wash any lingering tears away as we all mosh our ways into the future and it’s beautiful uncertainties.
