After Memorial Day weekend, the Arvada Center will become a rotating mural museum, complete with live-painted murals from some of Denver’s most well-known street artists and other Colorado mural artists. Titled In Sight On Site: Muralsthese artists will take over the Arvada Center’s three gallery spaces, working on blank panels (unfortunately, not the walls). Over 20 artists are set to participate, coming into the galleries to paint “whenever their schedules allow” — as the press release announced.

Visitors to the Arvada Center between May 29 and June 24 might see the artists at work — a captivating sight for those unfamiliar with the creation of street art and murals. If the artists aren’t there when you visit, you’ll still be able to see murals in progress, an equally informative insight.

Some of the artists who will participate have street art throughout Denver, like Thomas “Detour” Evans, Sandra Fettingis and Anthony Garcia Sr. Detour’s style favors bright, colorful portraits and abstract designs that have gained him the attention of people like the Denver Art Museum and even David Letterman.

Fettingis’ geometric paintings adorn numerous establishments around the city on exterior walls — including Denver Central Market — as well as on interior walls — like Galvanize (pictured below) — and her structural work can be seen at many RTD light rail stations.

Garcia Sr. is a long-standing staple in the Denver street art scene and founder of the Birdseed Collective. His list of public art projects and murals is lengthy and impressive, including a centerpiece in the CRUSH parking lot and four large cornerstones at 6th Avenue and Federal Boulevard.

The Arvada Center, an institution typically dedicated to the fine arts, is sure to attract an entirely new crowd of onlookers during this exhibition. The opening reception of the completed works is on June 28 from 6 to 8 p.m., an event that is free and open to the public. Don’t worry if you miss that reception, the mural collection will be on view until August 26, 2018.
