The Best Winter Coats That Aren’t Ugly and Keep You Warm

For many of us, the drop in temperature means ditching all of the rules of fashion we fastidiously abided by for most of the year. Instead, we grab for something lumpy and misshapen that’s been hiding in the back of the closet since last winter, because staying warm triumphs over looking cool. Not this year. This season, we did our research and consulted some of the city’s fashion experts to compile the following list of winter coats for all occasions that are as functional as they are stylish.

Casual

Calvin Klein

Cost: $176.40
The Lowdown: “Simple and timeless, this Calvin Klein coat goes seamlessly from work, to play, to everything in between. The camel color will go with anything you wear — yes, even black and gray — and it will never go out of style. Plus, it won’t shed on your tights or put lint on your sweater.” – Lucille Wenegieme, The Black Velveteen

Dance & Marvel

Free People

Hours: Monday-Saturday: 9 a.m. -10 p.m., Sunday: 8 a.m.-6 p.m.
Cost: $168
The Lowdown: “I can never say no to a faux fur jacket like this one from Free People, especially during this time of the year. This one via Free People is my current favorite, because it literally feels like a hug. It’s so soft, and I just love how much interest it adds to any look. Faux fur jackets always make a statement. They totally speak for themselves, and I’m all about that. Especially when I’m in a rush without much time to think about what I’m going to wear, and I still want to stand out with my look.” – Carolina Hellal, author of Denver fashion blog, Chic Talk

Cost: $134+
The Lowdown: “I recently was on the hunt for a beautiful velvet jacket for the holiday season coming up. I landed on this fabulous, black velvet smoking jacket from J.Crew. You can dress it up for an evening out, or you can dress it down for a casual coffee date with friends. Just because it is fancy jacket doesn’t mean you have to wear it for a special occasion. I love getting the most out of my wardrobe.” – Jack Savoie

“J.Crew has amazing options, and J.Crew Factory has lower prices.” – Amber Wilkerson (see her coat here)

“J.Crew has such great sales on coats.” – Abby Miller, creator of Denver Darling

The Lowdown: “The two jackets I find necessary to stay on trend this winter season are suede and teddy. Both are super stylish, warm and come with a ton of options to choose from. Suede is my winner as the perfect jacket for going out on a chilly night.” – Courtney Oldencamp, creator of Denver fashion, travel and lifestyle blog, Everyday Chiffon

Athletic

Obermeyer

Where: Obermeyer online
Cost: $239
The Lowdown: Obermeyer has been a trusted staple for outdoor gear for generations. We love the waterproof Vienna Jacket for its range of colors and smart details, like a removable hood and interior electronics pocket.

NOIZE

The Lowdown: “For athletic, I currently love this coat by NOIZE. They are a vegan brand, and their parkas are great quality and very affordable.” – Amber Wilkerson, creator of fashion blog, Every Once in a Style

Burton

Where: Burton online
Cost: $249.95 – $299
The Lowdown: “For a ski jacket, one of my favorites would be my Burton FZ Insulator ski jacket. It is pretty simple and is all black, but it’s so warm and looks classy while riding the slopes. It also works well for an apres-ski hot toddy.” –  Jack Savoie, creator of lifestyle and menswear blog, The Savoie Daily. We also love this Burton Saxton Parka because it combines the more casual style of a Parka while having the functions of a real winter coat.
