Metal Meltdown: Skinny Puppy, Animals As Leaders, Pallbearer

There are so many good metal shows going on this weekend that I’m getting depressed just thinking about it – I’m moving and there’s no way I’ll be able to make it to all of these, especially the ones that are on the same night. It’s kind of a bummer when great events overlap, but it’s also a good sign that the metal scene in Denver is alive and well. It may be a challenge to catch all of these, but these lineups are great, so at least try and catch one or two!

Skinny Puppy @ The Ogden  – Fri. Dec. 12th

Skinny Puppy of world-renowned Gothic industrial  fame will be gracing the Ogden with their presence this Friday. I’m not too familiar with the other bands on the lineup, probably because I don’t follow this particular branch of metal as closely as some others, but based on their descriptions they seem really cool as well. If you’re a fan of industrial classics you should not miss out on this rare treat!

Who: Skinny Puppy, VNV Nation, Haujobb

Animals as Leaders @ The Gothic – Sat. Dec. 13th

Animals as Leaders play a technical blend of metal that is really pretty beautiful and uplifting, with it’s tricky time signatures and lilting melodies. They will be joined by The Devin Townsend Project, who take similar liberties with their sound. If you nerd out for breaking the laws of time signature and form, then this show is for you.

Dax Riggs @ Lost Lake Lounge – Sat. Dec. 13th

OK, so technically its not metal, but Dax used to be the lead singer of Acid Bath, and the acoustic/softer sounds of his solo project are definitely influenced by doom. For those who haven’t had the pleasure of seeing him in the past, his live sets are emotional and intense, and Lost Lake seems like the perfect venue to enjoy this kind of music.

Who: Dax Riggs, The Guestlist, Larry Nix & The Killer Gents

Doors: 8:00 PM

Cost: $8 early bird, $12 in advance, $15 the day of

Cannabis Corpse @ The Marquis – Sun. Dec. 14th

This Sunday, Cannabis Corpse, the weed-themed death metal band from my previous home of Richmond, VA, will be in Denver getting down. As their name suggests, this is always a great show for the area, and they will be joined by some other good thrashy acts as well.

Who: Cannabis Corpse, Mammoth Grinder, Inanimate Existence, Scalafrea

Doors: 7:00 PM

Cost: $15

pallbearer

Pallbearer @ The Bluebird – Sun. Dec. 14th

Awesome doomsters Pallbearer are making a triumphant return and playing in Denver this Sunday. This one is totally worth checking out if you were “born to late” and prefer the slow and sludgy to the fast and thrashy.

Who: Pallbearer, Solstafir, Mortals

Doors: 7:00 PM

Cost: $12 in advance, $15 the day of
