Looking for a sexy new hideout? You’d be forgiven for dismissing Crimson Canary as perhaps being too cartoonish for the job, from their tagline (“Boss Italian American Cups & Plates”) to the intro on their website (“We aint’ your run of the mill marinara and meatball type joint, see…”). But slide into one of this new restaurant’s red leather booths for a meal, and you’ll discover that the swagger is backed up by the scallopini, the bluster by the burrata. With a dark, sensuous atmosphere flocked in red velvet, Crimson Canary, opened by the owners of Interstate Kitchen and Bar, is a good choice for that dimly-lit rendezvous…and a fine spot for happy hour as well.

Crimson Canary’s happy hour runs every day from 3–6pm, and then again from 11pm until close (weekend partiers, take note). Miller Highlife and PBR can be had for $2, well drinks for $3 and glasses of house wine for $4. And if you’re willing to dine early, a meal can be made of the happy hour specials on food—meatballs, sausages, mussels, broccoli rabe and salumeria appear, as well as fried calamari (an absolutely delightful dish, with slices of battered and fried pepperoncini tossed in among the tentacles). Your garlic breath afterward might prevent any actual canoodling, but mama’s cooking will be well worth it.
