Active ChildPat Grossi has cut plenty of interesting tracks as Active Child. His sound is primarily based on rhythm-and-blues melodies, bound together through an array of synths and accentuated by his soulful falsetto. When he performs at the Larimer Lounge this Thursday, November 21, he’ll be bringing with him a new set of songs from a recently released EP, Rapor.

The new record doesn’t deviate far from the standards set by Active Child when the Los Angeles producer first began dropping tracks online three years ago. Grossi pulls from nearly all angles offered by the world of synth. Consider “Subtle,” a percussion-heavy cut off the new EP. The synth mix changes up rapidly leading up to the refrain, combining a bit of police drama percussion with tingling keys. Then singer Mikky Ekko appears on the midsection, his spiky flow confirming of the track’s gaudy ambition.

Grossi had actually first started composing tunes as Active Child during the years he lived in Denver, taking the project farther when he moved back to his native area of Los Angeles. Colorado’s electronic scene tends to gravitate towards jam-oriented acts, so it’s not a surprise to hear that he would want to take his stark compositions to cities with more ears. Perhaps not entirely coincidentally, he even collaborated with another former Colorado resident who took east his own soul electronica act, How To Dress Well.

The biggest name on the Rapor EP would Ellie Goulding, whose starry turn on “Silhoutte” provides a sensuous burn to the track’s slow chilly crawl of horns, snares and Grossi’s crestfallen vocal harmony.
