Step aside, CrossFit. Sure, those grueling WOD sessions might make you feel badass with old-school lifts, sounds of heavy Olympic bars hitting the ground, hyped-up coaches spitting and barking at you. But with TACFIT, you will actually be badass. You will be limber. You will become agile and fast. And you will be stronger than you ever thought possible.

TACFIT is a training regimen designed by martial arts expert and trainer Scott Sonnon. Intended for special operations military personnel, law enforcement, and firemen, these programs– specifically TacFit Commando–focus on the necessary mobility and function of the body rather than brute strength. Scott’s background in martial arts and experience training Navy SEALS, secret service, and MMA fighters have played an integral role in the construct of his methods, which incorporate agility training as well as mind-body disciplines.

“Not just fitness– but diving into the meaning of the word ‘fitness’: to be fit for the life you have chosen. Not just energy, but the knowledge of how to focus and channel that energy to accomplish the goals you select. Not just strength of body, but strength of heart: to master the fear and anxiety and stress that cripple us all”, offers Sonnon.

So how is tactical training different from functional training? Functional training, most simplistically, supports and maintains the functional integrity of the human body. It prepares us for what movements we make every day and allows for those tasks to become more balanced and fluid. Great stuff; don’t stop doing it. Tactical training is much more specific and draws from our predecessors’ hunting and gathering capabilities. Our long-gone need to climb trees and stalk prey does not negate the fact that our bodies are still built to move as such. Not much has changed over time physiologically; yet we find ourselves wasting away at the office, sitting in traffic, and reclining habitually in front of our beloved idiot box. Tactical training, says Scott, is “fitness for a purpose”.

TacFit Commando is, most impressively, attainable for all fitness levels. I have been incrementally adding elements of Scott’s methods to my own training as well as my clients’ programs and have seen amazing results with regards to joint health, mobility, and flexibility. Plus, it’s downright fun. What separates TACFIT from other current fitness trends is that the program can be entirely portable. Gym membership? Nah. Excuses? Not anymore.
