A few days ago I heard yet another story of a “killer pit bull” on the attack.
Apparently, the pit bull managed to jump a neighbor’s six-foot fence, mauling an unsuspecting dog in its own yard. The neighbor (and owner of the dog who was attacked) said he had no choice but to shoot the pit bull after a failed attempt to separate them.
So one dog got hurt, and another one died.
Unfortunately, we’ve all heard stories like this before—a pit bull on the loose attacking another animal or person for no apparent reason. It seems like some of the worst “attack stories” I’ve heard involve pit bulls—and to be honest, I’ve heard more negative things about them than positive. (I don’t have anything against this breed, but I’ve noticed this.)
Currently they are banned in Denver and Aurora, unless of course you have a pit bull as a service dog, which is totally legal now.
Some people are wholeheartedly against the breed—seeing these dogs as untrustworthy and violent by nature. As a matter of fact, I’ve heard some people say they would be happy to see these dogs go extinct.
And of course, there are those who say their pit bull(s) are completely trustworthy, loyal and kind. Now, I personally know a few of these people and
there isn’t a question in their mind regarding their safety or the safety of others. I even asked one them if they trusted their dog around their 3-year-old daughter, and she replied, “Oh, yea. I leave her sleeping on the couch sometimes with the dog in the same room—that’s like the only time I can
get a shower in.”
Some owners blame the media for ruining the breed’s reputation—while others say it’s in the dog’s nature to act violently, loving home or not.
What do you think? Did the media create the negative pit bull stereotype by only reporting incidents related to the breed?
Or…
Do violent dog attacks happen more often than we know, and we just don’t hear about them?

I have only ever had good experiences with pit bulls and think it is a shame that they are left to sit in the pound because people are afraid of the breed. I have lived with the sweetest pit bull and her son who is a mix. They are both wonderful dogs.
I agree, it is sad that they are left to sit in the pound–not only the pit bulls, but all animals. And as far as ownership goes, it’s great that you’ve had a chance to experience such a bond with yours 🙂 It’s amazing how they so quickly become a member of our families.

I think alot of how a dog acts is the environment it grows up in. Of course there is the exception however owners should take more responsibilty for the way they raise them and not just blame the breed. I have met some of the sweetest pit bulls. And I have met a mean pure bred chow and some of the little dogs are mean too!. It’s not just a specfic breed.
I have a 1 year old blue pitbull. She is the biggest baby I have ever met. I trust her with my 3 children (10, 6 and 3 years old). She is great with other dogs (big or small) and very loving and good with others. I get the dirty looks at the park sometimes but I have learned not to care.
I have 2 pits and they behave better then any other dog I’ve had. I’ve even changed the mindset of my neighbors changed towards these dogs. I think what the real problem is that people cannot truly identify a dog during an attack or know what a pit really looks like(and yes there’s a many different ways they can look) and bad owners. My female dog is a rescue and I would trust her next to a newborn because she stays so calm. Now my male is hyper but runs and walks take care of that. What we need is laws on breeding without a license and spay and nueter laws.
I have a 7yr old baby and a 6 yr old baby. My 7yr old is a male who sleeps with me, rides with me n the car and is my 110 lb lap dog so he thinks. His name is Hannibal. Every moring he makes the walk up the stairs with me next to my side and climbs into my 6 yr olds bed to give her good morning kisses! My 6 yr old is my daughter. Hannibal is not an animal which is “untamed and wild” he is a loving, entergetic, protective and VERY LOYAL dog ! I truly belive that it is all in how dogs are raised in how they will react to situations. Let’s face it when we are rasing our children and we teach them to go to the bathroom, eat their food, go to school, say please and thank you, we are teaching them repetitive behaviors as well as dog owners are teaching their dogs the same. People who get Pit bulls in the hopes of useing them as a fighting dogs personally need to be put in a cage themselves. I do not condoned dog fighting or cruelty to any creature. Pit bulls have gotten a bad rap because of all the media mum bo jumbo and falsely reported cases that dogs have attacked people that were not even really pit bulls. Makes me sick that the media steryotypes this breed of dog! I most certainly trust my PIT BULL to watch my child before I would a new babysitter. So heres to all the people who love their Pit bulls !!
I’VE RAISED PIT BULLS MY WHOLE LIFE AND NEVER ONCE HAVE I EVER BEEN BITTEN OR HARMED BY ANY OF THEM !!! THE MEDIA HAS MADE THEM ALL OUT TO BE LAND SHARKS AND IT JUST MAKES ME SICK TO THINK THEY KILL MILLIONS OF THESE DOGS BECAUSE OF WHAT THE MEDIA HAS MADE THEM OUT TO BE !!! I’M OUTRAGED AT WHAT A BAD RAP THESE DOGS HAVE GOTTEN. IF YOU MISTREAT ANY ANIMAL FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME EVEN A POODLE CAN BECOME VICIOUS AND WANT TO KILL . PIT BULLS WERE MAINLY BRED AS PROTECTORS NOT VICIOUS ANIMALS !!! WE SHOULD ALL TRY TO STOP THE HYPE AND SQUASH THE MEDIAS THEORY ON THESE GORGEOUS ANIMALS.
I have a pit and could not imagine not having her hugs and kisses every day. I decided to get a pit specifically after taking in a stray that was a pit mix. That stray was the sweetest dog I have ever known besides my Suzy (the pit I have now). I was heart-broken when my stray, Keeper, died from what appeared to be Parvo. I’ve had Suzy for over a year now, and she has been nothing but a bundle of love. She accepts my crazy squeezes, is great with my son, and absolutely adores our cats. She even took to mothering a stray kitten she found one day. She is also a certified Canine Good Citizen. It breaks my heart that these dogs that were once known as “baby-sitter dogs” are now known more for fighting. It is how the dog is raised and cared for. This breed has many desirable characteristics. How they are trained and used are up to the dog’s person. For example, the high pain tolerance is great when a kid is poking it in the face or pulling it’s tail, but a dog fighter also sees that as a positive, in a different light of course. Their stout, muscular bodies are great when being service dogs (especially when caring for a human that may be prone to falling), but then again, dog fighters see this as a plus too. Pits are very loyal dogs that want very much too please their person. Again, we can see how this could play out for a loving owner or a fighter. Like with any breed, it is our (the owner’s) responsibility to train our pets and guide them in the way they should behave.
