It’s tough when spring and medical marijuana dispensaries explode everywhere around you with celebratory buds after you’ve recently broken up with your girlfriend. It’s a bit of a slap in the face. So, you might think going out to parties or clubs will help take away the pain of being newly single. Sure, it’s a nice diversion and there is absolutely nothing wrong with having fun. But it’s not the same as having somebody in your life who thinks about you and calls you every day, as you do her. Friends can be good like that, but we all know it’s not the same if she’s not there anymore.

So I took it upon myself to accentuate the positive. Lord knows that isn’t easy for me. But, I decided to fall in love with all the things I cannot live without: good conversation, friendship, sunlight, laughter, tattoos and music. As my friend Johnny put it best, “It’s strange, really listening to the words of a song you’ve been mindlessly singing along to for years. I don’t know what the hell I’d do without music on rough days.”

And, as Jerry would say, “I need a miracle every day.” So I will invoke a little prayer toward this end or ask Madonna to sing something Like A Prayer on my behalf:

Our Father Who (Makes) Art In Heaven,

(I’ll cut to the chase):

Give us this day our daily joy via Radiohead, Muse, Sigur Ros, Prince, Morcheeba, Band of Horses, Beastie Boys, Jay-Z, Billie Holiday, Johnny Cash, Dave Matthews, Shiny Toy Guns, Dead Can Dance, and yes, The Twilight Saga: New Moon Soundtrack.

And forgive us our trespasses, especially while blogging.

As we forgive those who trespass against us, especially on Facebook.

And lead us not into temptation–like imbibing too much whiskey and making a spectacle of ourselves at the club–but let us experience it vicariously through badass, fake comic book mayhem like Tank Girl.

But deliver us from evil–especially the kind that is super-scary, like The Exorcist.

Etc., etc.

A(wo)MEN

And that’s my little prayer for when the fun’s over and I’m left with a bittersweet feeling because I can’t call her and tell her about it. Things don’t always turn out the way we’d like. Nothing a rousing backyard sermon or a pagan dance party under the starry sky can’t cure. As a local preacher once said, “Put on a heart of gratitude–it will change your attitude.” We all have wondrous days, we all have broken days–here’s to the excitement of discovering today.
