Run, paddle, or rock your way through the upcoming weekly event calendar. If fitness is in your favor this week, you can run for a cause with Open Door Ministries Saturday morning, then throw on a suit at sunset to stand up paddleboard the Chatfield Reservoir. Don’t forget the Pre-Zine musical showcase hosted by the Denver Zine Library, were you can connect with other local art, music, and DIY zine enthusiasts before the big zine fest in June. Whatever your cup of tea, this week features a variety of flavors for Coloradans across the Front Range.

The Low Down: Looking for some summer steals to add to your warm weather wardrobe? Check out this trunk show  for KARA, a “chic collection of utilitarian-meets-modernist handbags, designed with the principles of simplicity and functionality,” at LoHi boutique, Goldyn. While it’s just a stone’s throw from the ever popular restaurant, Linger, make sure to save some room as Goldyn will serve complimentary drinks and  hors d’oeuvres.

Run for the Door 5K

When: May 28, 7:30-10:30 a.m.

Where: Cheesman Park, 8th Ave & Franklin, Denver

Cost: $35, Children and Families receive discount

The Low Down: The Run for the Door 5k supports the spiritual and holistic healing programs backed by Open Door Ministries, a Denver-based non-profit. Open Door Ministries focuses on alleviating poverty, addiction, and supporting self-sufficiency for disenfranchised people in the Denver area. There will be pancakes and coffee provided for all participants to fuel up after the run (or walk!).

Where: Chatfield State Park, 11500 Roxborough Park Road, Littleton

The Low Down: Mountain Glow Paddle at Chatfield Reservoir is small group gathering open to anyone who wants to enjoy a peaceful summer paddle at sunset. The event will recur at 6 p.m. every other Saturday, beginning on May 28. All participants will be given a glowing illumination device to light their way as the sun sets. Reservations are required for this outing,  so call (303)472-3355 to reserve your spot.

 

Minimalism: A Documentary

When: May 25, 7:30-9 p.m.

Where: Lyric Cinema Cafe, 300 E Mountain Ave, Fort Collins

The Low Down: “Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things,” examines the many expressions of minimalism by exploring the journeys of minimalists from various walks of life. From minimalist architects, designers, and musicians, to businessmen, authors, and families, this documentary examines they keys to living a more meaningful, deliberate life (one that would make your neat-freak mother proud).

 

My First Show: A Pre-Denver Zine Fest Event

What: May 27, 6:30 p.m.

Where: Mutiny Information Cafe, 2 S. Broadway, Denver

Cost: $5-$10, sliding scale donations

The Low Down: This showcase will highlight a handful of local artists in their first-time live musical performances to benefit the upcoming Denver Zine Fest. Hosted by the Denver Zine Library, this event is the second of two to bring hype and support for Denver’s first ever Zine Fest in June, a celebration of local DIY comics, art, and of course, zines. The Low Down:  One of the largest yoga events in Denver kicks off this weekend. Stretching through September,  Yoga Rocks the Park is a free/donation-based outdoor community yoga event. Attendance can exceed two thousand people on a good day, so make sure to get there and lay your mat down early. Also, shade is limited, so sunblock (the organic variety) and a small towel or visor are good ideas. Setting up a personal shade structure along the perimeter of the park is also an option.
