This Week in Food: Local Barista Competition, New Restaurants & More

As we head toward the end of 2014, Denver’s culinary scene just keeps on expanding. This week, two newbies to the scene will open their doors and one Denver favorite debuts after a big renovation and menu re-vamp. Check out all the details on these new restaurants below along with info on a local barista competition, where you can dine with Santa and a unique holiday gift idea for that spirit-lover in your life.

North County

Where: 94 North Rampart Way, Denver, CO

When: Opens Monday, December 15, 2014

The Low Down: A collaboration between the Larimer Associates and Sterling Robinson, the chef and owner of Billy’s Inn, North County takes its cue from the taquerias of the coastal area North of San Diego. Featuring a menu filled with seafood, tacos and plenty of tequila – 100 varieties in fact, expect fresh flavors from dishes like Shrimp & Octopus Ceviche and Charcoal Grilled Oysters. Or go for items that are perfect for those margarita-soaked nights like the Queso Fundio, Carne Asada Fries and 8 taco choices.

Where:  1403 Larimer Street, Denver, CO

When: Friday December 5

The Low Down: Larimer Square is about to get a new swanky, subterranean spot in the form of Crimson Room. The elevated lounge comes from Brian Siffermann of Corridor 44, a champagne bar also located on Larimer. With luxe decor and a “private club” vibe, it aims to cater to the crème de la crème of Denver.  Stop by for sophisticated cocktails and barrel aged classics as well as selections from a “cold kitchen” serving chilled plates such as caviar, snow crab, shrimp cocktails and charcuterie boards. – words by Brittany Werges

   Re-Opening: Crave

Where: 891 14th Street, Suite 110, Denver, CO

When: The official re-grand opening event is Thursday, December 11, 2014, 5-9 p.m.

The Low Down: Crave is known for its sleek, modern vibe and selection of decadent sweet treats, but they’ve undergone a transformation and this week, they’re ready to reveal a new side of this Denver favorite. After a renovation that included expanded event space, Crave will debut its fresh digs and new menu with a celebration on Thursday night. The new menu includes weekend brunch items like breakfast sandwiches and pastries and dinner dishes that are ready for sharing like charcuterie boards.

 

Upcoming Events

Local Barista Competition (Thursday Night Throw-down)

Where: Crema Coffee House-  2862 Larimer St., Denver, CO

When: Begins at 6 p.m.

 Pro Tip: the competition is expected to last several hours so either come for the long haul or arrive late.

The Low Down: The gauntlet is about to be thrown with the most recent gathering of local baristas. This monthly competition, coined “Thursday Night Throw-downs,” happen every month at a rotating location. The first 30 baristas to sign-up will compete in a bracket style event. Each pair of competitors will have a flash card with a design to create via “latte art.” Each latte will be judged by a panel of people from the local coffee scene. Scores will be determined by factors such as symmetry and balance. Winners will receive a cash prize pooled from a competitor entry fee. Crema will also host its five year anniversary party during this time, making it the perfect event to fully experience the underground coffee culture in Denver. – words by Brittany Werges

Breakfast with Santa at the Four Seasons Denver

Cost: $35/adult (includes a mimosa), $25/child

The Low Down: There’s no better way to get into the holiday spirit than some fact time with the big man himself. Head to the Four Seasons for some Christmas cheer this weekend as they host a breakfast with Santa complete with a storyteller and a spread of sweet treats. And don’t forget to bring along a toy to be donated to the Denver Santa Claus Shop.
