They say that fashions fade, but that style is forever.  That might as well be the mantra for all of us here at 303.  As we look back over the last ten years as a magazine, we can’t help but notice that our styles are timeless…especially those on our covers.

Look for the full “Then and Now” spread in the ten year anniversary issue for more recreations of timeless 303 fashions.

If anything can be trusted to stand the test of time, its the statement necklace. Whether it’s boasting bright colors or grabbing attention because of its size or complexly designed, the statement necklace deserves a spot in the jewelry arsenal of every 303 woman. Best of all, perhaps, is its sheer versatility – it can be classic, chic, glam or feminine. It can offset an otherwise scandalous neckline. It can add some much-needed bling to an overly neutral outfit. And it will always give you a little boost of the only other thing as timeless on a woman as a statement necklace: confidence.

In 2011 we favored a tribal-themed, chunky version exploding with bright, fun colors.  If this theme speaks to your personal taste and style, then by all means recreate it directly.  Take a cue from this 2011 cover and keep the rest of your outfit neutral – it’ll allow for the necklace to really stand out. A statement necklace as big and colorful as this one will frame your face, so make sure that your makeup is up to filling the spotlight. Bold eyes and a nude lip are an edgy classic that you can always count on to complete a fashion-forward look.

If, however, you’re looking for a 2014 version of a big, beautiful statement necklace, look for brightly-colored gemstones, eye-catching gold, or heavy silver detailing. Local boutiques are great for scoring some great finds, or bigger retailers like J. Crew or Urban Outfitters can be counted on to have some beautiful pieces.

Here are three different options that will definitely make a (current) statement:

While many times a neutral outfit is the perfect complement to a bright statement necklace, sometimes it pays to play off the color scheme. Bring the candy tones into the rest of your outfit with a royal blue blouse, yellow skinnies, and a punchy pink lip.

Eye-Catching Goldl-5

Gold is luxurious and open to lots of interpretation, but it undeniably pairs perfectly with a nautical theme. Try a navy and white striped dress in a simple silhouette. The classic quality of the dress won’t compete with a statement necklace, and therefore the necklace will stand out without overpowering. Gold stud earrings and basic navy heels finish off the look without being too matchy.

There’s nothing quite as cool as a big, heavy silver necklace. So of course, the best outfit to pair with that is the uniform of cool: all black. A monochromatic look will allow for the necklace to really take center stage. We’re loving these high waisted skinnies, a crop top, and suede booties. Pair the necklace with hands full of rings for a look that won’t ever burn out.

Whether the year is 2011, 2014 or 2024, statement necklaces are a surefire classic –  all they need is a little updating. Be sure to look for more exciting look revivals in the print issue of 303 magazine, hitting stands in August!
