Review: Deer Tick at the Bluebird Theater

After canceling their Wednesday show due to an emergency in John McCauley’s family, Deer Tick took the stage Thursday night to a sold out (and psyched up, Halloween-celebrating) crowd.  The dudes of Deer Tick went as skinny-musicians-as-Spice Girls. McCauley’s abs could give Sporty a run for her money. The band played with their badass folky zest, producing that beloved alt-country sound that manages to stay consistently riveting. Gut-wrenching, celebratory and sad. Achey and party-centric.

McCauley’s voice is, at times, so incredibly nasal and scratchy. But it’s tender and captivating- with a lovable familiarity. The more you listen to them, the more they seem like an old friend.  Robert Ellis and band, dressed as Insane Clown Posse, opened.
