The highly anticipated Video Music Awards show aired this past Sunday, August 25th. MTV airs the program annually, this year being the 30th. The Video Music Awards is an awards show that showcases what fans vote and consider the best music videos of the past year. The music being honored is usually pop, with a little bit of hip-hop and rock here and there. The 2013 show was held at the Barclays C”enter in Brooklyn, New York. The show had an unusual twist this year; there was no host, although comedian Kevin Hart made a couple of appearances. Celebrities in attendance included Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, One direction, and many more.
As usual, the most entertaining parts of the Video Music Awards are the performances and not the awards. Who could forget Lady Gaga’s meat suit? Of course, Beyonce also officially announced her pregnancy at a VMA show as well. And, Kanye West’s “Imma let you finish” incident of 2009, will always remain one of the biggest moments for pop culture. This year Lady Gaga opened the show performing her new song in a string bikini with the top resembling one that could be seen in Disney’s The Little Mermaid; however, it was still a great performance. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis performed their rising hit “Same Love” with a surprise cameo by Jennifer Hudson. Drake, Kanye West (yes, they let him perform), Bruno Mars, and Katy Perry also graced the stage.
The title of the best performance may be a tie. Justin Timberlake won the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, and celebrated with a mini-concert, and get this—brought out N*Sync to perform a few classic hits with him. On the other hand, highly controversial new Miley Cyrus performed her new song “We Can’t Stop” in a fuzzy one-piece, later turned orange latex two-piece. She also did a mash-up with Robin Thicke, 2 Chainz, and Kendrick Lamar. That performance was very interesting, to say the least.
Although performances are a big part of the night, we can’t forget about the true purpose of the show, the awards. Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars, Selena Gomez, and many others went home with moon men to place on their mantels. If you missed the 2013 Video Music Awards, there is nothing to worry about. The show airs frequently for the next couple of weeks on MTV (channel 23 locally).
