As if doctors didn’t already do enough, I’ve recently discovered a compelling story of doctors who have given new meaning to being “hands on.” To kick off Colorado’s summer cycling season, thousands of riders will meet at the Douglas County Fair Grounds in Castle Rock, on June 2, to ride in the 2013 Subaru Elephant Rock Ride – the Rocky Mountain’s largest cycling festival. Amongst this group of riders is a team on a mission.

The American Transplant Foundation’s (americantransplantfoundation.org) charity cycling team, Team Transplant, is made up of 32 transplant recipients and living donors who have made remarkable recoveries. This group is committed to raising awareness to help save the lives of those still waiting for a transplant.
In a special appearance this year, team members will include Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Kidney Transplant Center, (pslmc.com) and doctors Michael Shoemaker, M.D. and Bradley Marder, M.D. As members of the team, these doctors will be riding alongside their patients and their families to raise continued awareness about living organ donation. By participating in this race these doctors have given their patients and their donors new hope, confidence and the courage that help is on its way.
