Accessorize Me: Adorned in Gold

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend. But this season, revel in something different—gold. Lose the gems and let this simple but classic metal do the talking. Women known for their extreme beauty, like Nefertiti and Cleopatra, have been adorning themselves in this lustrous metal since before the dawn of modern civilization. And what woman wouldn’t want to feel like an empress?

Jewels will always be beautiful—and trust me, I’ll never turn them down—but in recent years we have placed an unnecessary emphasis on them. Jewelry has become laden, encrusted, and decked out in gemstones. Half the time we walk around looking like very expensive disco balls. So my challenge to you is to find beauty in this simple metal.

Gold can be ornate, delicate, or modern. It can be anything that you want it to be. And the best part is, it’s still gold. It’s still a luxurious and precious metal. Unlike platinum, rose gold, or silver, gold is also the easiest metal to dress-up or dress-down.

Heading into Spring and Summer, one of the best looks for jewelry is the layered look—stack rings, wear multiple bangles, throw on an extra necklace. This style is about having fun and enjoying the inherent femininity of jewelry. Mixing and matching different styles and textures is the perfect way to go. And unlike gems, this style looks effortless. Like you went into your jewelry cabinet and just threw a few things on.

“It is always better to be slightly underdressed.” –Coco Chanel

Coco Chanel got many things right. And the notion of not overdressing is an important one. The beauty of gold is that you can make it as fun or as elegant as you want. And if you are going for both, then gold may be your new best friend. Try a chunky gold look. A giant necklace with a dainty one, a huge bangle, and some stacked rings. Throw on a super-feminine blouse and the look is complete. It’s all about balance. If you go chunky on jewelry, balance it with something delicate.

There are great options out there if you are not in the market for real gold. But if you are, it is completely worth it. Other metals tarnish and gems can fall out of settings. Gold on the other hand is resilient. So as you plan your Spring and Summer beach vacations, remember to pack your gold. Every woman likes to look like a beach beauty—so leave your gold necklaces and rings on as you fearlessly play in the waves. The air, salt, chlorine or water will not hurt this lustrous metal.

So kiss your diamonds and amethysts and sapphires goodbye—for the Season. And have fun with gold. And if you don’t trust me, trust Coco.
