Trend & True: Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring 2013 New York Collections

I have yet to don my new Dr. Martens Kimora high heel boots, yet I already long for Spring.  My dreams of late consist of brunch with the girls wearing a perfect floral look, strolls in the park in bold orange, and traveling with an array of lace, leather and chiffon pieces.  Thanks to the New York Collections shown at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week for Spring 2013 I have enough to dream about until the snow melts and my boots are packed away.

Let’s review the things I covet for Spring 2013 from NYC.

Lace, I love the idea of something so feminine and beautiful.  Lace was featured in several collections.  From the ladylike at Lela Rose to the sexy at Vera Wang.  The large lace patterns at Chris Benz, Jill Stuart, and Anna Sui kept it fresh and slightly edgy all the while maintaining its inherent femininity.

Bold Colors were all over the runways.  Color will be so welcome as it shows up in stores during the gray winter.  Designer’s use of color was brilliant, from edgy pieces to beautiful gowns.  Nicholas K and Chado Ralph Rucci showed amazing bold orange looks.  Diane Von Furstenberg featured a bright color palette, including chartreuse.  Zang Toi and Donna Karan offered up colors I usually find in my favorite mix of Ladurée macarons.

Prints, from digital and abstract to floral, stripes and polka dots dominated Spring collections.  Notable florals at Nicole Miller, Zac Posen, and Tory Burch.  Polka dots and stripes in strong polished looks at Michel Kors, Pamela Roland, and Jenny Packham.  Digital prints continue from fall.  The effect for spring ranges from bold to softly abstract.  Bold and graphic prints at Vivienne Tam, Bibhu Mohpaptra and Herve Leger, and abstract at J. Mendel and Naeem Khan.

Leather and Chiffon, who would have thought that a leather skirt is now considered a year round piece, and in black none-the-less.  Fall 2012 is heavy in leather, especially the leather leg.  Spring swings that focus to colored pieces and dresses.  Still black, Lacoste and Diesel Black Gold have edgy dresses.  From Monique Lhullier and Reem Acra are structured dresses in hues of red leather.

I hope you find as much to dream about as I have from the Spring 2013 New York collections.

  1. I'm love, love, loving the fall looks this year especially the leather leg. I just got my faux version this week! I'm excited about spring next year but for now I'm totally focused on fall it's gonna be a wonderful end of the year

  2. Try pairing your leather legging with something lace or chiffon and that way you can wear your fall look into spring. Thank you for the comment.

  3. I find myself coveting laces, bold colors, leathers, prints and chiffons for 2013. Thanks Tracy for the interesting writeup and pictures

  4. Love all the picks here! I think I'm most excited about leather (who doesn't love a good leather skirt?) and the harnesses at both BCBG & Jason Wu – it's a fun way to make pretty things look a little more edgy and tough. Can't wait for it–I'm definitely a spring & summer girl (and dreading the cold months ahead, blah).
